The introduction of the 428 Cobra Jet engine package in April, 1968 was preceded by the stunning success of the 1968 Ford Drag Team at the NHRA Winternationals in February. Thanks to the efforts of FoMoCo, Tasca Ford, Holman & Moody/Stroppe, and a team of top-shelf drivers, the competition never had a chance. |

Historic Ford Drag Cars is a new section derived from the Team Flashback section. Here, we race full throttle into the past, featuring vintage (and current) photos of race cars that truly made their mark on the quarter mile. These Stockers, Super Stockers, and Pro Stockers ruled the 1320 - "back in the day." |
Start with a heavily modified engine compartment and front suspension, shoehorn in a 657-horse 427-inch Cammer, and slather with a liberal dose of fiberglass. They were like Thunderbolts on steroids. They were built in very limited numbers. They were the 1965 A/FX Mustangs. Built by Ford Motor Co., with a little help from Dearborn Steel Tubing and the infamous Holman & Moody. Built for one purpose; dragstrip domination. Mission accomplished. |
The truth is out there. The SOHC Galaxie. The '67 GT-500 Convertible. The Green Hornet Shelby. The Boss 302 Shelby. The Boss 429 Cougar. The Torino King Cobra. The Cyclone Super Spoiler II. The Quarterhorse Mustang. The '71 Boss 302. And, last but not least, the elusive and ever controversial '68 427 Mustang, sure to raise the ire of Cougar owners everywhere. A small collection of Ford's UFO's are here in The X-Files. You want to believe. |
It was The Going Thing. A traveling drag racing team and performance clinic, direct from Dearborn to the dealerships and dragstrips. Proficent drivers such as Hubert Platt, Dick Wood, Randy Payne, and Ed Terry drove specially prepared cars provided by Ford Motor Co. These drivers, and their Mustangs, Torinos, Cougars, Cyclones, and Mavericks comprised the Ford Drag Team. |
