Dragway Classics
is a 40-minute color video now available on DVD.
This video was produced from some fantastic 8mm footage shot by Larry Malski and his father in 1965-67 at
Detroit Dragway, 1968 at
Motor City Dragway,
and 1970-71 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Larry caught many Super Stockers, A/FX cars, Funny Cars and match-racers
in action. He also walked the pits of course, checking out many of the top drag racing cars of the day, and many
lesser known cars as well. This video captures the era of the altered wheelbase cars and the first flip-top funny cars.
Fortunately, the footage is heavily laden with our favorite brand, including Larry Coleman's (ex-Hubert Platt)
Holman & Moody long-nose '66 Mustang, Ed Rachanski's "Super Marauder" topless '65 Cyclone, Maynard Rupp's "Cougar
Country" STP '67 Cougar F/C, Kenny Vogt's "Stinger II" '67 Comet, Stu Evan's "Charging Cyclone" '65 Cyclone,
the Jack Loftus Ford '66 Mustang, Paul Harvey's '66 A/FX Mustang,
Stone, Woods & Cook "Dark Horse 2" '66 Mustang gasser,
the Walt Hickey Ford "Competition +" '67 Mustang F/C, Ed Shartman's '66
Comet F/C, and his Maverick P/S, Dave Lyall's Bob Ford/Custom Speed Enterprises '66 Fairlane,
Bill Lawton's Tasca Ford "Mystery 8" '66 Mustang,
the Moody and Williams '66 Fairlane, Ron Bros '66 Mustang, Ed Terry's Ford Drag Team Maverick,
the Ford of Canada Performance Clinic Drag Team, and Barry Poole's Mustang and Comet.
The highlights include a match-race at Detroit Dragway in 1966 with Dave Lyall driving the Catron Bros.
'65 A/FX Falcon against the Moody & Williams (ex-Bob Ford)
Expressway Gulf Thunderbolt,
Lyall wins as the T-Bolt shuts down early.
We also witness the unfortunate footage of Dick Brannan rolling his Bob Ford '65 Mustang while putting a hurting on
Seaton's Shaker Chevelle during a
Match Race at Detroit in 1965.
Another great clip is
Maynard Rupp's STP Cougar
racing Huston Platt's un-lettered "Dixie Twister" Camaro at
Motor City in 1968; Platt does a huge wheelie and easily flips over the guardrail,
landing just a few feet from a spectator lined chain-link fence!
And, there is some great footage of the
huge traffic jam trying to get into IRP for the U.S. Nationals in 1971. Many race fans are camped out at the
Clermont Drive-In Theater,
a long-time fixture (which just closed in 2007) across the street from IRP's entrance, and
the fantastic original neon IRP entrance sign is visible as well. This sign was actually preserved by Top Fuel driver
Bruce Litton when it was replaced, but
was sadly lost in a fire at his shop in 2001.
For those who may stray from the Blue Oval, non-Fords are included here also; Garlit's Dart and red dragster,
Prudhomme's dragster,
Dick Jesse's GTO, Seaton's Shaker, the Ramchargers
Dart, the Golden Commandos Barracuda, the Stardust Charger, the Gray Ghost GTO, Pelligrini's Super Bird Buick, Sox &
Martin's Cuda, Dick Landy's Challenger, and a host of others.
The quality of this very rare footage is good, with just a few rough spots.
There is no sound, but a great background music track was added featuring Born To Be
Wild, Low Rider, Radar Love, Magic Carpet Ride, and other classic rock tunes.
A short 2-minute teaser segment from the DVD and several vidcaps are posted below for your enjoyment,
the quality of which is degraded somewhat from the actual DVD.
You can purchase a copy of this fantastic video, and assorted vintage drag racing photos, direct from
Larry Malski on eBay.
