FORD DRAG TEAM 1969-1970
"THE GOING THING"

Ed Terry's Drag Team 1969/1970 427-SOHC Mustang, 9R02T178884, was up for grabs on EBAY in November 2002. It was a no sale at the starting bid of $50,000. Here is the item decription, with all of it's errors, as the auction link will eventually drop off:

But the Horsepower Race was nearing its end in 1969, with 1970 to be the peak! In 69 actual output of the ‘Boss 429’ was in the neighborhood of a whopping 515 horses ! These were not machines for the weak spirited ! Only now, after being out of production all these years, is the true potential of these engineering, “The Going Thing” G-force masterpieces being fully realized. And there was more ! - There were the now super Collectible Shelbys - the GT350 and GT500 Coupes and Convertibles that bring ever escalating resale bids at major Collector Car Auctions ! AND THEN - THE MOST ! For the absolute ultimate in go - there were the one-off Racers - the heavily modified, the expensive ‘Factory Team Drag Cars’ - lightened, with their Big Blocks built to 600+ horsepower and Dyno Tuned to quick wind-up perfection ! -- Of course you didn’t drive those Leaping, Tire Burnin’, 1/4 mile Brutes on the street unless you were very late getting that parts payment deposit to your bank ! THE HISTORY OF 1969 FORD MUSTANG VIN 9R02T178884 : Ed Terrys 1969/1970 Ford ‘Factory Drag Team’ Cammer ! (Articles attached as a part of this Appraisal) As part of Fords Factory Sponsored Racing plans for 1969 - it comissioned 4 Special Race Cars be made utilizing their ultimate Hi-Performance Big Block Engines ! 2 of those were Super Sport 427 SOHV ‘Cammer’ Drag prepped Mustang SportRoofs - while the other 2 were Drag prepped Fairlane Cobras with 429s. They were campaigned as pairs, on both Coasts of the U.S. - with the East Coast Mustang /Fairlane combo driven by Hubert Platt and Randy Payne and the West Coast Mustang/ Fairlane driven by Ed Terry and sometimes, Dick Wood. Each Coastal Drag Exhibition combo was Transported to important Race Events s on a classy new matching colored Ford Truck with Trailer (email to see Article photos). This particular historic ultimate ‘Hauler’ is in the opinion of this Appraiser, beyond doubt, Fords West Coast Version of the two ‘Factory Team’ Mustangs and is a MuscleCar Drag Car of major historical importance. Long thought lost - 1969 Mustang VIN 9R02T178884 originated as one of the lightest Mustangs available - a base 6 cylinder, ‘T Code’ SportRoof Model delivered by Folger Ford in Monroeville, California ! But, it was destined to become Ed Terrys, Drag Racing screamer - one of the 2 that Ford comissioned built to make their mark on the 1/4 Mile World of AHRA/NHRA Asphault Burners for 1969 and 1970. Holman-Moody-Stroppe of Long Beach, California converted the White Pearl w/ Acapulco Blue Striping West Coast versions (the 2nd pair, driven on the East Coast by Platt & Payne were same colors, but the opposite combination - Acapulco Blue w/White Pearl Striping. It had been discovered earlier (as described in Mustang & Fords Magazine article). Discovered entwined with Blackberry Bushes in the rear of a Body Shop in Hayward, California, owner Richard Fahning reports he finally purchased the Terry Super-Stocker (later in 1970s as Pro-Stocker) “about 1986”. Fahning of Californias ‘Gold Country’, has long stored the Terry car sensing its long term importance in the annals of Drag Racing History. Contacted by Mr. Fahnning in July of 2002 and briefed about his Ed Terry ‘Ford Team’ Drag Race Car - a Car that been Campaigned with Fords Sponsorship certainly piqued my immediate interest. Could it really be the actual Ed Terry car - long thought lost? Traveling to California in August of 2002, after all the Pebble Beach Weekend Auctions, the Concours and the Laguna Seca Races - a drive North and our Inspection / Diagnosis of 1969 Ford Mustang 9R02178884 followed on August 19, 2002. There, after a cordial meeting with Fahnning, my Assistant Timothy Pierce and I found a remarkably solid and well preserved White / Blue Striped ‘SportRoof’ FastBack with faded original paint, , numerous Lightweight Fibreglass Body Panels, Ford Team Lettering with Holman-Moody-Stroppe identification AND showing the ghostish outlines of its former bodyside Drag Racing logos & product endorsement Decals - many removed, but still readable in the paint. Our over and under Diagnosis / Inspection followed for the next few hours - shining my trusty Flashlight beam into the Mustangs Body, the Interior with original Rollcage (but with Replacement Seats, addition of a Passenger Seat and faded Carpets) and into the Undercarriage crevices. Finding a newer replacement Ford ‘360’ Engine underhood with Automatic Transmission - most of this remarkable ‘Survivor’ is original ! As Inspection / Diagnosis progressed, I was startled at the history I could ‘read’ on the former Terry / Wood car ! I thought, how fortunate that it hadn’t been repainted and or ‘restored’ - and its history erased. --------- This was indeed a major ‘find’ ! A StarCar, a mid-10s Screamer that made news at the forefront of Pro-Stock Racing - and one that, backed with, FoMoCos Dealer Sponsored Drag Racing ‘Clinics’ , backed with Fords ‘The Going Thing’ Advertisments, undoubtedly sold thousands of those shiney, stock Mustang 302s, Mach Is, Boss 429s and Carrol Shelby GT 500 Big Blocks waiting on the Dealership Showroom floors across the U.S. RESTORE OR KEEP ORIGINAL ?: As a very important and still surprisingly original RaceCar made specifically under Ford Sponsorship for Pro Stock Drag Racing, this Ed Terry one-off fortunately remains ‘unrestored’ ! With original paint and lightweight Fibreglass components intact - it ‘reads’ the extensive body and suspension modifications - the battle scars of its glory years just about everywhere ! Considering its high cost of development, its newsmaking history, the rate of destruction of vehicles of its type AND the fact that it, Ed Terry and Hubert Platt became so newsworthy nationwide - it’s not just important - it’s a Drag Racing history treasure ! A treasure that, in the opinion of this Appraiser, should be preserved primarily in original state, much in the ‘Survivor’ philosophy mold of Dave Burroughs, founder of Corvette/’Bloomington Gold’ fame (letter of theory attached). Dave was leader of the trend against overgleaming restoration of historic Racing vehicles. With only return to original 1969-1970 Racing state in mind and leaving the scars of battle - that means return to original type, configuration engine, drivetrain, lettering/decals (one side only) and interior equipment for best appearance ‘for show’, without wiping away all the wear patterns that confirm it is genuine ! Artful Clean and Detail of every crevice over and under - careful repaint of of only some areas is OK, but only providing it does not mask the evidence of its years in the limelight. That brief limelight near the end of Fords factory sponsored ‘Big Block’ Drag Racing. RUN TEST/DRIVE TEST/ROAD TEST: Run Test only. Present ‘460’ Engine is Good Running CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATIONS: As a one-off - - this is Blue Chip MuscleCar stuff! A Big Block brute of a 1/4 Mile, Ed Terry/Dick Wood, mid 10 Second performer ‘Survivor’ and prime example of the peak of ‘Detroits historic horsepower race. A get there first Drag Race Car with Racing History and especially as a Factory Sponsored ‘Ford Team Car’ transported to major Events First Class style, on a matching painted and lettered Ford Transporter Truck with 2nd Car Trailer - -- here friends is a Super Collectible MuscleCar -- one of just 2 made ! -- a ‘Ford Factory Team Car’ -- with documented performance history ! email for more photos"
