Bill Holbrook/Charles Morris Photo © 2008

Scrapped?: The very first A/FX Mustang was 5F07F100xxx, a Wimbledon White hardtop that was built by Dearborn Steel Tubing and the Ford Experimental Garage. It was was fitted with a 427 High Riser engine. This is a shot of the Hemi Haunter before it was repainted and lettered. More Hemi Haunter & A/FX photos from noted Ford racing author Charles Morris' books at Cartechbooks.com. (Bill Holbrook/Charles Morris Photo © 2008)

The Hemi Haunter now painted Bob Ford's team color, Champagne Beige, with red coves. This was a $1 car sold to Bob Ford in Dearborn, and was intially driven by Ford test driver Len Richter. It was believed to have been wrecked by it's second driver, Kenny Salter. The current whereabouts of this car are unknown, it was likely crushed.

Bill Lawton "Zimmy III" Tasca Ford

Survivor: 5F09K380xxx was car #1 of 10 built by H&M. It was delivered to Tasca Ford, and was driven by Bill Lawton. The car was named Zimmy III, and retained it's factory applied Vintage Burgandy paint job. This car was returned to H&M after the season, where it was converted to 1966 C6HM-DR specs.

The November 1965 issue of Super Stock magazine featured the Tasca AFX Mustang on the cover.

Les Ritchey - Performance Associates

Scrapped?: Les Ritchey received 5F09K380xxx, car #2 of 10. It was powered by a 427 High Riser which Ritchey equipped with Weber carbs. It was sponsored by Ritchey's Performance Associates shop, and retained it's factory silver paint job. After the season, #2 was reportedly returned to H&M, where it was then updated to 1966 A/FX specs and then returned to Ritchey for the '66 season.

Les Ritchey on the line from a 1965 racing magazine.

Here is Ritchey's Candyapple Red car from a 1966 magazine article. It is unknown if this is his silver '65 car after a repaint, or a different car. In May 1966, Ritchey was killed when his AFX Mustang was involved in a racing accident at Fontana Raceway. At Ford's request, the Mustang was stored at H&M where it would eventually reside alongside three other crashed Ford race cars that resulted in fatalities. These were Walt Hansgen's GT40 MkII, Ken Miles' GT40 J-car, and Horst Kwech's T/A Mustang.

Another shot of the 1966 version, this one with injectors.

Clester Andrews - Wickersham Ford

Survivor: 5F09K380xxx was Car #3 of 10 done by H&M, raced by Clester Andrews in 1965. Currently restored to '65 specs with 427-HR power. Here it is at Irwindale Raceway in 1965.

Old Hippie Forum

Old Hippie Forum

Like so many other old races cars, #3 went under the knife and received some major mods to stay competitive. Straight axle, engine setback, heavily modified firewall and fuel injection evident here.

Old Hippie Forum

Front axle forward relocation was also part of the updates. Rear axle appears to have remained in it's '65 location. Caption indicates 427 wedge power was also retained.

This modification was likely part of the H&M 1966 season update. It also appears in post-1965 photos of the Tasca, Bob Ford, Ronda, Andrews and Ritchey 1965 cars. (Charlie Morris Photo)

Len Richter "The Quiet One" Bob Ford

Survivor: 5F09K380xxx was car #6 of 10. Originally Poppy Red, it was was repainted Champagne Beige and ran by Richter for Bob Ford in '65. Hubert Platt apparently drove it in A/MP in 1968 and early 1969. Dyno Don aquired the car in 1969 and ran it in A/MP with Harvey Ford lettering. It was sold in late '69 to some NYC racers, where it saw much action on the street.

Mecum Auction Gallery

Ronda's car has been found and restored. It was up for auction by Mecum in October, 2008. Mecum lists the vin as 5F09_3802440, which does not match the factory records, and has one too many digits in the sequential number. The actual vin should be 5F09K380xxx. The auction listing also claims there was a batch of 11 built, numbered 5F09_3802430 through 5F09_3802440, again with too many digits. See more photos here. This car is now owned by a collector, along with the real Gas Ronda long nose '66 Mustang.
